About Me

I’ve been playing in Virtual Reality over a year now and I’ve enjoyed everything about it so far. The great part about it is that I get to experience loads of free content because of new game developers trying to get up on their feet.

And, not to mention, the paid games and apps are just incredible. It’s so immersive and highly detailed that it’s bound to knock anyone’s socks off.

My favorite VR app so far is VRChat because you can find both worlds and avatars that people spent countless hours on making it look high quality, or even production quality. It’s not all about seriousness though, a ton of people will make funny avatars with these skills and role play as them.

If I could, I would have purchased a VR headset way before I actually bought one. It’s just that much fun.

I’ve had a bunch of friends come over to my house and after trying it, they considered buying themselves a headset too. It really is that fun of an experience.

I even had to pull it off my younger siblings because they just couldn’t stop playing the games on my Oculus Rift. It’s probably the best choice you could make if you were thinking of getting someone a gift.

I think the best part of the whole experience is the social interactions you have on the VR headset is unlike any other game. You become completely immersed in whatever it is that you’re doing.

I instantly got hooked and even tried out some RPG – multiplayer games where you could forge your own sword or tools to fight off some creepy, cave dwellers.

I heard from so many other people to just buy the headset if you’re really into gaming, which I have been since I was a child. So, I figured, “why not”? I quickly headed online to ship my a Oculus Rift headset, which came with the sensors and controllers.

At first, I thought I would regret paying 400$ for a gaming console that I may not even enjoy. Boy was I wrong. Once I tried it, I instantly realized that my only regret was not getting it sooner!

Some things I wish I knew before buying my virtual reality headset

I still love my Oculus Rift to this day, but one thing I wish I knew about before making the purchase was, “how well did the full body sensors for Oculus Rift work”?

I quickly realized that the only way to show your leg movement in-game or to show your body doing some cool dance moves was to connect an X-Box Connect to my PC.

On top of this, you also have to purchase a cord to hook the X-Box Kinect to the PC. And, not to mention, the cord is far from cheap. This was quite a disappointment when I first learned this and I started to look into a headset that works great for full body functionality.

The Kinect also doesn’t even bring the true, full-body experience. Once you turn around in-game, your legs don’t follow and turn around with your body. If that doesn’t turn you off from buying the Kinect, then I don’t know what will.

I found that the HTC Vive could provide the best full-body, virtual reality experience. It also requires less PC work load than the Oculus Rift. The only distinction between these headsets is the difference of 200$. If I really cared enough for that sort of experience, I’m certain I would cough up the money to buy the HTC Vive.

I get to experience all this while making new friends online, it really is something special! This picture on the right was taken in VRChat, where anyone can upload their own 3D model and can use them as a player model. I can’t seem to find another experience like it. I’ve made tons of friends in other games, but something always makes me coming back to this game and the fun, loving environment.

So far, I don’t regret, at all, spending so much money even though $400 while in college is a lot. I don’t have much money to spend, so, I thought long and hard about this choice.

If I didn’t get into virtual reality technology, I think I would have made a huge mistake. I’ve had way too much fun just exploring all the creations that people have dedicated time to displaying their art or emotions.

On top of that, I finally got scared from a horror game! I used to think horror games were silly until I put on the virtual reality headset, then I was in for a real ride. I’m pretty sure I screamed as loud as I did in this video when I first played a VR horror game.

Is it worth it to spend the money to get a Virtual Reality Headset?

In my opinion, yes! It’ll probably be the most interactive and rewarding gaming experience you’ll ever have.

You could choose to sit by the beach or you can open up a meditation app to get yourself extra relaxed. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, you could walk through the streets of Tokyo or New York with the use of the Google VR App made available free to any virtual reality headset user. The possibilities are pretty much endless in the virtual world, which is probably why I find it to be so fun!

My Personal Experience in VR using the Oculus Rift

Oculus Rift Head Set

There’s a wide variety of virtual reality headsets on the market and Oculus Rift, Windows Mixed Reality, and the HTC Vive are some of the most famous ones out of them all. When I was searching for a headset for the first time I found it tough to figure out whether or not I made the right decision in buying it.

The price is not bad at all, it came out to be 400$ in total, but when compared to the Windows Mixed Reality headset, it seems so expensive!

The cost of the Windows Mixed Reality headset is only $250, so why spend the extra $150? Trust me, I thought about this long and hard, and since this was going to be my first virtual reality purchase, I wanted to be not only satisfied, but amazed.

Why did I choose the Oculus Rift over the Windows Mixed Reality headset?

I chose to compare the windows mixed reality headset with the Oculus Rift because of the price ranges being relatively close. I was curious myself, so, I decided to do some research.

I asked other people using the Windows Mixed Reality headset what they thought and they found the experience to be sub-par compared to the Oculus Rift for a few reasons. In certain games, for example in VRChat, users are unable to load models from other players, which meant that you couldn’t even see player models in the headset. Although this may not seem like a big deal, this could effect other games as well.

Not being able to use virtual reality content is a real let down, so, I made this issue THE number one reason to not get the Windows Mixed Reality headset. Another issue the Windows Mixed Reality headset has is that it doesn’t support a 360 degree turn radius for users.

This means that users will only be able to look up and down, left to right, but are unable to move their head diagonally. The Oculus Rift also offers free games along with your purchase, and I’ll tell you right now that the games are definitely worth the extra money.

One game that is worth noting that you get for free is: Robo Recall. It’s a fast paced shooter where you defend the cities from the robot overthrow. It’s real fun and I’m sure you’d enjoy trying to beat the levels, too!

What games come with the Oculus Rift?

I was pleasantly surprised to find most of the games were pretty fun in their own way. Once again, I definitely thought buying a brand new Oculus Rift was worth the purchase. It guaranteed me that I would get a non-defective product with a pretty good warranty.

The only way to get the free games in the first place is by purchasing a brand new Oculus Rift because the free reward games are bound to the Oculus headset. So, if you try to make a new Oculus Home account, you won’t get access to these games. If you attempt to purchase a headset that’s used, you won’t be able to get these free games: Robo Recall, Dead and Buried, Lucky’s Tale, Medium, Toybox, and Quill.

Is virtual reality fun?

I’ve always played games ever since I can remember. I used to play Pokemon when it was on the Gameboy classic, and even still own a Playstation 2. I’ve purchased a Playstation 3 and a gaming PC powerful enough to play some of the highest quality games.

Despite all this, I still think VR beats all of these experiences. Virtual Reality is such a novel and exciting experience that I believe everyone should try it.

It has shown me so many experiences that I wasn’t even prepared for. Whether that be through meeting a bunch of new friends to play video games with or learning how to deal with some of your deepest fears in horror games. Not to mention, there are so many applications to help your mental health and to relax your mind whenever you need it. In conclusion, I’ve had the most fun in VR compared to any other game that I’ve played.

How often do Oculus Rifts break?

I was wondering how often these VR headsets actually break so I went and asked around my friends to see what they thought.

I’ve had my Oculus Rift for about 2 years now and it has managed to break only once during that time period. Fortunately, Oculus Rift offers great customer service and was able to get me a brand new Oculus Rift Headset for free! I’ve asked a few of my friends and they all were able to make their Oculus Rift last way longer than me.

I didn’t even have to pay for shipping, all I did was place my headset in a box, along with its cord, and sent it off to the local UPS. And within a week, I was able to get back to playing in virtual reality. So now, I always remind myself to handle the VR headset very delicately.
